Damian Cudlin has got people talking in the German Superbike paddock after an impressive test at Cartagena in Spain this week. The young Aussie took the chance to test this years HKM/Bike Promotion CBR600 Supersport machine with aspirations of riding in the IDM series next season, and despite having to learn the circuit and new machine Cudlin set blistering lap times sparking new interest within the IDM establishment. Speaking from his European base in Austria, Cudlin indicated a permanent ride in the series looks very likely as long the 2008 Calendar doesn’t conflict with the 2008 World Endurance Championship, a series he remains committed in trying to win.
“The Bike Promotion guys offered me a chance to test their bike from this season’s Supersport campaign and with some help from my good friend Dirk Benkert we boarded a plane and headed to Spain.” Cudlin explained. “I hadn’t ridden a 600 for 4 years so I spent the first day adapting my style, but once I got comfortable the times began to fall. It was a nice bike to ride and the Bike Promotion guys were very good to work with. I’m glad I decided to go.” Cudlin also sampled the race winning G-LAB Triumph at the test and was left equally impressed with the machine. “Dietmar Franzen also asked if I was interested in testing his bike which I obviously was. The Triumph was strong and I can see how Rico (Penzkofer) has won so many races this year. It was a good opportunity testing two leading bikes back to back as I saw each ones strong and weak points. I’m really looking forward to seeing how the next few weeks pan out now.” Intending to compete in both the IDM and Endurance World Championships next season, Cudlin looks set to have a busy schedule however he believes he’ll be even more competitive as a result. “The Endurance Championship is something I really want to win and is still my main priority next year” insisted the YART rider “but I think it won’t hurt doing a bit more riding and if I can win in the IDM series, which is widely regarded as the biggest in Europe, then it’ll do my career a world of good. Hopefully things will fall into place.” Cudlin will fly to Qatar on Tuesday in preparation for the final round of the World Endurance Championship with his Yamaha Austria Racing Team on November 10th. |
